Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to develop a correlation between the properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene parts 3D printed by material extrusion (MEX) process.

Design/methodology/approach

The two MEX parameters and their values have been selected by design of experiment method. Three properties of MEX parts, i.e. strength (tensile and three-point bending), surface roughness and the dimensional accuracy, are studied at different build speeds (35 mm/s, 45 mm/s and 55 mm/s) and the layer heights (0.06 mm, 0.10 mm and 0.15 mm).

Findings

The results show that tensile strength and three-point bending strength both increase with the decrease in build speed and the layer height. The artifact selected for dimensional accuracy test shows higher accuracy of the features when 3D printed with 0.06 mm layer height at 35 mm/s build speed as compared to those of higher layer heights and build speeds. The optical images of the 3D-printed specimen reveal that lower build speed and the layer height promote higher inter-layer diffusion that has the effect of strong bonding between the layers and, as a result, higher strength of the specimen. The surface roughness values also have direct relation with the build speed and the layer height.

Originality/value

The whole experiments demonstrate that the part quality, surface roughness and the mechanical strength are correlated and depend on the build speed and the layer height.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is having an unprecedented impact on schools and schoolchildren across the globe. There is still a dearth of studies that investigate this recent phenomenon in a developing country context, and this is true of Pakistan. Much of the population in Pakistan resides in rural settings and a lack of technology and of online provision of teaching for more than one year must have had huge negative impacts on students’ learning. The school dropout rate was already high in rural settings (Geven & Hasan, 2020) and, with school closures, this will likely have increased further, and cause some schoolchildren to lose interest in going back to school. However, no current data appear to exist to corroborate this. Due to the lack of available current quantitative and qualitative data, this study seeks to explore the impact of COVID-19 on schoolchildren’s education in Pakistan by examining recently published related studies. This study employs a literature review technique that gathers data to ascertain the potential overall impact on schoolchildren during the pandemic. The findings reveal that there remains a lack of detailed studies on this important topic and that urgent attention is needed from researchers to assess the scale of the impact. In addition, the review found that many children from rural communities had little to no school engagement due to technology poverty and their families being unable to support home-schooling, either due to family and/or work constraints or a lack of prior education and/or skills. Themes that emerged were that families, especially mothers, struggled to balance both caring and home-schooling duties, pupils from private schools had a better experience than those from public school backgrounds, and many of these reported that online provisions helped students develop new skills. This study may help to improve the understanding of the impact on the lost learning of schoolchildren during the pandemic by guiding practitioners as well as policymakers.

Abstract

Purpose

Most available studies focus mainly on Islamic economics and finance with none conducted on Islamic marketing bibliometrics. The purpose of this paper is to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Journal of Islamic Marketing (JIMA) in 2020 by evaluating the publication pattern and scientific advancement of JIMA between 2010 and 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper used bibliometric analysis and visualization of similarities viewer software for the graphical conception of the bibliographic data, including bibliographic coupling, co-citation and co-occurrence of keywords.

Findings

There was an increase in the number of journal documents and this depicts a rising interest in the submission of articles. Moreover, the number of conceptual papers received has also increased and this shows JIMA’s support for knowledge development in Islamic marketing. Meanwhile, Halal is one of the currently trending topics, therefore, there is an opportunity for more exploration and research on the concept.

Research limitations/implications

The bibliographical material applied in this study was only retrieved from the Scopus database. Therefore, more studies need to be conducted by incorporating other indexing and database in the scientific field of Islamic marketing.

Practical implications

The research is useful to understand queries related to scientific products such as the number of publications, contributors, keywords, countries and institutions often used in the articles of the journal.

Originality/value

It presented an exclusive bibliometrics analysis and identified the main trend of the publications in the journal from 2010 when it was established until the second issue of volume 11 in 2020.

Abstract

Purpose

In light of COVID-19 and its subsequent disruptions, along with simultaneous changes and transformations taking place, job insecurity (JI) is significantly heightened among employees. This study aims to analyze how JI influences employees’ organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) and whether positive psychological capital (PsyCap) and grit moderate this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the study hypotheses, data was gathered during COVID-19 via convenience sampling. The collected data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software and Excel MegaStat.

Findings

The empirical data shows that qualitative JI has a negative relationship with OCB. PsyCap and grit moderate the relationship between both JI dimensions and OCB.

Practical implications

Managers can alleviate JI in the workplace by promoting PsyCap and grit among employees, both of which will sustain and promote OCB, even during difficult times.

Originality/value

This study bridges the gap in the literature regarding the impact of JI on employees’ OCB during the pandemic. This study also adds to the limited number of studies exploring personal resources as potential moderators between JI and organization citizenship behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

Guided by the cognitive-affective system theory of personality (CAPS), this study aims to investigate the parallel mediating effects of cognitive and affective cynicism on the relationship between illegitimate tasks and employees’ adaptive performance. It also proposes growth need strength as a moderating variable for relationships between illegitimate tasks and employees’ adaptive performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a time-lagged design, data were gathered from 330 frontline hotel employees in China.

Findings

The authors found that the presence of illegitimate tasks is negatively associated with employees’ adaptive performance, this relationship being mediated by cognitive and affective cynicism. Growth need strength weakens the negative impacts of cognitive and affective cynicism on employees’ adaptive performance. In addition, the indirect effect of illegitimate tasks on employees’ adaptive performance via cognitive and affective cynicism is stronger for employees with lower levels of growth need strength.

Practical implications

Hotel managers must heed the negative impact of illegitimate tasks. Furthermore, they should underscore the importance of promoting a harmonious and positive organizational culture and atmosphere. Naturally, hotel managers must also establish effective communication with employees, assisting them in fostering a desire for excellence in their work.

Originality/value

This study provides valuable insights for the hospitality industry by investigating how illegitimate tasks hold sway over hotel employees’ adaptive performance. The study uses a moderated dual-path model to uncover the mechanisms behind this impact and the influence of boundary conditions, thereby expanding the understanding of the topic.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite being a Muslim-dominated country, Bangladesh has widely embraced traditional microfinance since its inception in the mid-1970s. However, Islamic microfinance, which has a lot to offer to the poor, is still in its infancy and has yet to gain momentum in the country. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the importance of Islamic microfinance and propose alternative Shariah-compliant microfinance models in Bangladesh.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on the desk research method, which relies on existing literature to collect secondary data on key concerns of traditional microfinance programs. In addition, institutional-level secondary data were also collected from the Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) of Bangladesh. Guided by the Maqasid-al-Shariah, this study then proposes several Islamic microfinance models to overcome selected challenges faced by the microfinance industry in Bangladesh.

Findings

This study suggested three composite Shariah-compliant microfinance models, which are likely to help the underprivileged and thus ensure the achievement of the sustainable development goals in Bangladesh. The first model explained how the operational strategy of incumbent microfinance institutions (MFIs) could be restructured, while the second proposed the organizational strategies for establishing a new MFI. The third model used the notion of Sadaqah (charity) to address the multiple borrowing issues of the industry. Meanwhile, the successful transformation of the conventional microfinance industry to an Islamic one is dependent on the effective collaboration between the regulatory authorities, practitioners and MFIs.

Originality/value

Albeit the paucity of literature on the topic, the findings of this study will guide policymakers/practitioners in designing relevant microfinance models to help transform conventional microfinance into Islamic microfinance in Bangladesh.

Abstract

Purpose

In the 21st century, spirituality is becoming an interesting phenomenon in the workplace and has been discussed by academicians, researchers, and practitioners alike. This growing knowledge offers important insights and calls for conceptual and empirical studies on workplace spirituality. Accordingly, the current research aims to examine how ethical leadership (EL) helps to foster workplace spirituality and job satisfaction (JS) in the information technology (IT) industry. Additionally, it investigates the mediating role of workplace spirituality and moderating role of self-efficacy (SE) in the relationship between EL and JS.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a cross-sectional design, the data were collected from 268 employees in the IT industry and analyzed on SmartPLS 3.2 using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The findings indicated that EL promotes a sense of spirituality and increases JS. Additionally, results suggested that workplace spirituality partially mediates, and SE moderates the relationship between EL and JS.

Practical implications

The results suggest that the top executives should work on identifying and developing ethical qualities to promote a sense of meaningfulness (workplace spirituality) and increase JS.

Originality/value

The research provides an important contribution to the academic literature by exploring the role of EL in fostering spirituality among employees and the moderation of SE on the relationship between EL and JS in the services industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the factors that may influence customers’ acceptance of Islamic home financing and identify the possible moderator, which may be relevant using the decomposed theory of planned behaviour (DTPB) in the context of Malaysia and Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature on Islamic mortgage and DTPB is reviewed in a bid to identify the determinants that may contribute to customers’ desire to participate in Islamic home financing.

Findings

The review indicates that customers’ acceptance of Islamic home financing is not only determined by the subjective norm, attitude, perceived behavioural control but also by the added construct of awareness and decomposed variables, namely, perceived compatibility, perceived relative advantage, peers influence and self-efficacy. In the context of the current study, the country is proposed as a moderator variable that may influence the relationship for customers’ acceptance of Islamic mortgages.

Research limitations/implications

In terms of conceptualising the model, only two countries are considered, which is Malaysia and Pakistan as categorical variables or moderators incorporated in DTPB.

Originality/value

Existing literature on Islamic mortgages makes it evident that DTPB is yet to be applied in the context of studying Islamic home financing. This study extends the application of DTPB in the context of customers’ acceptance of Islamic mortgages in two countries, Malaysia and Pakistan. This paper will be a helpful resource for future researchers, academicians and managers of Islamic banks at large.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a valid and reliable scale for measuring an integrated total quality and socially responsible management (TQSR-M) model, which affects business excellence.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through a questionnaire in two phases (first for scale development and second for scale validation purpose) from managers employed in Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) listed companies. The structural equation modeling technique (SEM) was used to develop and validate the measurement and structural model.

Findings

This study confirmed the empirical validation of the eight distinct dimensions (top management, strategic planning management, human resource management, supplier management, customer management, social/community management and environmental management) of TQSR-M. Moreover, the validation of the TQSR-M model is further confirmed by testing the relationship between TQSR-M and the hypothetically associated business performance variables through SEM.

Research limitations/implications

The measurement scale helps companies assess the TQSR-M model related to business excellence. It assists managers in identifying the factors for implementing total quality management (TQM) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices in their organization for developing TQM and CSR plans, policies and strategies.

Social implications

This study confirmed that combined TQM-CSR approaches are potential sources of achieving business excellence, sustainable competitive advantages and improving the quality of life of the workforce, local communities and the environment in particular and even of society in general.

Originality/value

Despite such studies exploring the association between TQM and CSR, it remains unclear how the integration of both the concepts develops. Academics and managers lack a tool to measure TQM-CSR together. Therefore, this study integrates both distinct areas of TQM and CSR into a single comprehensive model by developing a measurement scale.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of employee perception of training on organizational commitment, and consequently, the impact of organizational commitment on turnover intention.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted a quantitative research design. Data were collected from 302 registered nurses working at Jordanian hospitals using an email survey questionnaire. Using statistical package for the social science analysis of regression to test the hypothesized model.

Findings

The results suggest a strong relationship between two variables: perceived availability of training and perceived supervisor support for training and organizational commitment. On the other hand, the perceived benefits of training is found to be negatively related to organizational commitment. The study also confirms a strong inverse association between organizational commitment and turnover intention.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations and suggestions for future studies three as with all research, there are limitations to this work. First, only three employee perceptions of training are investigated in this study to include perceived availability of training, perceived supervisor support for training and perceived benefits of training. Given that employee perceptions of training include a number of factors, future research may consider other factors such as motivation to learn and co-worker support for training (Newman et al., 2011). Second, the study uses a quantitative approach. Future studies may conduct interviews to examine the relationship between the variables. Third, the data came from registered nurses working in hospitals in a single industry; to increase the generalizability of the findings, there is a need for future research in other industries in Jordan. Fourth, other attitudinal constructs in addition to organizational commitment may act as potential mediators in the relationship between employee perception of training and turnover intention. Future studies can include mediating variables such as job satisfaction (Poon, 2004) and trust in management (Whitener, 2001), which may better explain the hypothesized relationships. Finally, the findings cannot be generalized, as there is a possibility of bias because of differences in knowledge of and attitude to perceived training.

Practical implications

The findings of the present study have implications for theory and practice. At the theoretical level, the current study adds to the body of knowledge on commitment and turnover. Specifically, the current study provides evidence of a strong or weak relationship between employee perception of training, organizational commitment and turnover intention. The research findings verify the applicability of the social exchange theory (Blau, 1964) and the norm of reciprocity (Gouldner, 1960), and concurs with Fishbein and Ajzen’s (1967) model of beliefs, attitude and behavioral intentions in Jordanian hospitals. From the practical aspect, the study findings urge Jordanian hospitals to enhance employee perception of training and correlated development opportunities, so as to fulfill their employees’ needs and expectations in terms of organizational development. Hospitals may achieve this by providing effective and more comprehensive training programs and urging supervisors to motivate their subordinates to participate in these programs (Jehanzeb et al., 2013). This study results also confirm that perceived supervisor support is very significant to the maintenance of organizational commitment. Hospitals need to create an environment in which practicing training is highly motivated by supervisors. While supervisors are required to publicize the availability of training to the nursing workforce (Ha et al., 2014). Furthermore, the study findings reveal no evidence of a link between perceived benefits of training and organizational commitment. The premise behind this result is attributed to the fact that employees believe that the benefits obtained from participating in training activities are very limited (Kadiresan et al., 2015). So, supervisors are requested to raise their awareness of the benefits to be gained from participating in training programs. The role of supervisors here is very important, they should also unfreeze the old concerns of individuals through positive approach by communicating aggressively about the benefits of training. Moreover, hospitals need to focus more on promoting better relations between training and career development (Newman et al., 2011). Finally, the study results suggest that organizational commitment is negatively related to turnover intention. So, to increase organizational commitment, the hospitals’ management should first, design more effective in house training, as well as motivate their nursing workforce, and financially support external training programs that will foster the nurses’ skills and knowledge. Second, create a culture of commitment to reinforce the relationship with nursing workforce and encourage them to consider the hospital as a family to which they belong (Diab and Ajlouni, 2015). Finally, the work and environmental conditions must be improved through the provision of career development and promotion opportunities (Silva and Dias, 2016).

Originality/value

This study makes a significant theoretical contribution to the literature, as it addresses an essential and not so well researched issue in Jordan a developing Arab country in Middle East. The paper investigates the interaction between employee perceptions of training, organizational commitment and turnover intention of registered nurses in Jordanian Hospitals.
